NTT INDYCAR SERIES: Who Is David Malukas? The Gen Z Driver, Master Meme-Maker & Video Game Lover
Updated Jul. 10, 2025 11:25 a.m. ET – Meet the Meme King of INDYCAR. At just 23 years old, David Malukas has already made 53 starts in the series. It could have been more if not for a broken wrist he suffered while mountain biking, which turned his 2024 season upside down — leading to his release from Arrow McLaren before he ever set foot in a race. Now driving for A.J. Foyt Racing, Malukas is seen as a potential replacement for Will Power at Team Penske and is currently ranked 12th in the standings after 10 races this season. He also describes himself as a video game addict and a master of memes, sharing more in this interview with FOX Sports.

How would your friends or your girlfriend describe you?
That’s how I think they would describe me. Just very real. I am who I am. No matter the situation, I like to just be myself, show my jokes, my memes — no matter how serious things can get.
You’re at Road America, a place where you saw your dad race. How cool is it to race at a place where you watched your dad? (Father Henry is a racer and owner of HMD Motorsports in INDY NXT)
It’s very cool. It’s really special because he was in a Corvette too okebet agent vip. I grew up here as a kid, did some karting, and watched my dad drive around here, so it’s pretty fun. My dad and I can always talk about how much INDYCAR goes through the carousel and the kink. He’s always amazed that we’re actually flat [on the throttle] going through there. It’s awesome.
Does he give you advice on how to drive an INDYCAR?
No, definitely not. I don’t get advice from him. When he was still racing, he actually asked me for some tips on how to navigate the track. He did DD2 [karting] and even made it to the kart masters finals, so he was really good back then.
You’re from the Chicago area, so are you a Bulls fan in Pacers territory?
I wasn’t really into basketball, so actually, I attended Pacers games and developed a connection with them. The game I attended was against the Bulls, so it was a win-win for me. Regardless of the outcome, I was happy. That was a strategic game to watch.
Cubs or White Sox?
I grew up around motorsports, but I had to pick a side. When I was really young, I was a White Sox fan, but now I’ve switched to being a Cubs fan.
As a Gen Z driver, do you think they need better music at the track? What’s your suggestion for an INDYCAR race?
It’s about making things feel fun. There’s a balance between professionalism and having a good laugh. I think it would be great to have a more relaxed atmosphere in the paddock, with some good music and memes. That’s kind of my approach.
How many memes have gotten you into trouble, and how many do people actually enjoy?
I have to go through an extensive review process. It can take me hours or sometimes days before I post something, just to make sure the meme won’t be misinterpreted. I consult a lot of different people to see their take on it. Most people outside of Gen Z will say, “I don’t even know what that means,” which is great because then no one gets offended. We take great care in ensuring my posts won’t cause any conflict, although part of Gen Z humor involves pushing boundaries a bit.
It seems that attitude has probably helped you over the last 18 months?
Absolutely — 100 percent. I approach it with full confidence, and I just do what I want to do. I stay true to myself and don’t let anything change who I am.
Are you a gamer too? Or a lot?
A lot. order number tracker Right now, I’m playing Football Manager, which is all about soccer. During my teenage years, I got really into soccer because I lived in England, where the Premier League is huge. My team is Chelsea, and I love Football Manager. It’s super nerdy, but I enjoy managing the details and ensuring everyone is in the right mood. I used to play casual games like Call of Duty, but now I prefer more strategy-focused games to help manage my ADHD.
Are you someone who can’t start playing because you know you’ll play for four hours?
Yes, that’s why I avoid starting it. Once I’m in the zone, two hours can pass without me realizing. So, when I only have 30 minutes or an hour, I know I can’t get anything done.
So you don’t even try?
No, I don’t even try. It’s just not going to happen.

Addicted? I’m already addicted — 100 percent, yes. It is what it is. My whole family has ADHD, and anything that helps us manage our hyper-fixations is beneficial. For me, gaming allows me to switch everything off and hyper-focus on one thing, which I think correlates to my success on the track.
Do you use a pseudonym so nobody knows who you are in online games?
Oh yeah, 100 percent.
Have you ever had anyone come up to you at the track and say, ‘Hey, I was playing you’?
No, but since I’m a passionate gamer, I’m on Reddit. If I have a bad race, I avoid Reddit because people can be harsh. I’m also on Discord and part of the INDYCAR Discord channel, so some guys there know my name and see me play. A few people in the INDYCAR paddock are aware, but most aren’t.
Finally, do you try to explain this stuff to your team boss Larry Foyt?
I haven’t even attempted. I think he would just not get it.
